Well it finally happened. I've succumed to the dreaded winter chest cold. Usually all through winter I tend to have a bit of the sniffles but usually like clockwork, come January I get hit with either a chest cold, sinus infection or something similar. As we're now coming to the end of February I thought for sure I had beat it. I thought for sure that I was in the clear. But sadly I was wrong.
I've felt completely fine lately, then came Wednesday where I found I was sneezing a lot, a bit of a tiny cough but nothing to to worry myself about. I worked through the day Thursday, felt I was for sure going to get a cold but thought, oh it won't be too bad. Then as usual, later that evening it started. Dry hacking cough, sneezing, stuffed up...ugh, hello chest cold. Welcome back my 'friend'.
Needless to say, that night when I went to bed I covered myself in Vicks vapor rub, took two pills and waited for the morning. It didn't get better, but worse.
So this is my winter cold dream team remedy:
Vicks Vapor Rub, a roll of toilet paper, Buckleys Complete syrup- their slogan 'It tastes awful and it works', sooooo true! This stuff tastes absolutely horrible, a mix between the taste of pine (there is pine needle in it I guess) and amonnia. Seriously bad stuff. But it is the ONLY thing that works for me when I have a really bad cold. They also make a pill version but we've run out and had family send us the next best thing, Benylin All-In-One pills. These items are my cold fighting solution. A few days of taking these items, extra sleep and I'm back on the mend. If I were to rely on any other similar products, they just wouldn't do the trick and I'd be fighting for weeks. So I'd say by mid next week I should be fine again as long as I stick to my trusty regime!
I'm so ready for this winter to be over. Bring on warmer sunny days! All this cold weather and rain has finally caught up with me. The constant chill and damp. I don't remeber the last time I felt truly warm (except under my two duvets in bed at night). Damn you lack of central heating! Its so nice to see the warm bright sun though today. Though I can't even enjoy it as I'm sick and staying indoors, off from work. Boo!
Its the weekend now though. I have two more days to rest which I fully plan on taking advantage of. So what are you cold fighting remedies? Any tricks or tips that you swear by you'd like to share? Stay warm, stay healthy!

The crappy weather recently has been just horrible, all my washing stinks of rain as it just gets soaked! Really sorry you got ill, it sounds horrible you poor thing! Get better soon miss xxx

The best recipe is lots of rest, stay warm, drink plenty of fluids and if there's fever for more than a day do get the doctor to see if you need prescribed meds. I have been able to live out my last cold just by taking the usual panadols and doing the Vaporub inhalation with a towel over my head, then straight to bed, my cold lasted quite a while! I'm really looking forward to spring this year! Get well soon Angela!
ReplyDeleteI love a mug of: fresh lemon juice (1/2 lemon??), spoon of honey, fresh ground ginger, shot of whiskey, boiling water topped off with a bit of nutmeg. Adult NeoCitron. Works wonders, believe me, for the sinuses/chest. Lots of Vit C!!
